<p align="justify">Miguel Neira, docente del Instituto de Producción y Sanidad Vegetal de la Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias UACh, tiene grandes motivos para celebrar, esto debido a que su proyecto resultó beneficiado con el Fondo de mejoramiento del patrimonio sanitario FONDOSAG.</p><p align="justify">El proyecto titulado "Medidas estratégicas que contribuyan al fortalecimiento de la vigilancia, diagnóstico y control de la Loque americana y Varroosis en Apis Mellifera", busca definir zonas de riesgo de la enfermedad Loque americana que afecta sólo a larvas de abeja en etapa de cría cerrada.</p><p align="justify">Miguel Neira afirma que, todos quienes componen el equipo de trabajo están felices por la posibilidad de realizar esta nueva investigación, la cual permitirá además formar nuevos profesionales en el área.</p><p align="justify"><strong>Loque americana</strong></p><p align="justify">La Loque americana (LA) es una enfermedad bacteriana producida por un bacilo denominado <em>Paenibacillus larvae White</em>, este microorganismo posee forma de bastón de unas 2,5 a 5 micras de largo por 0,4 – 0,8 micras, móvil con flagelos. Una característica fundamental de <em>P. larvae</em> es la formación de endosporas, las cuales son extremadamente resistentes al calor, desinfectantes químicos, cloro, radiación UV, iodados y agua caliente con cualquier aditivo.</p><p align="justify">Las esporas de <em>Paenibacillus larvae</em> pueden permanecer infectivas por mas de 40 años, aunque ven disminuida su viabilidad luego de este periodo. Presentan la particularidad física fundamental de poseer movimiento browniano, por lo tanto, cuando se observan al microscopio óptico se muevan constantemente permitiendo así una mejor identificación.</p><p align="justify">Cuando la enfermedad se presenta los opérculos de los panales de cría se tornan húmedos y más oscuros, para luego hundirse. Es en ese momento que las abejas comienzan a retirar los restos larvales. Luego de muertas, las crías adquieren un color castaño y despiden un olor desagradable. </p><p align="justify">Las larvas muertas por L.A. adquieren una consistencia semifluida, que se asemeja a la goma de mascar, es por esto que cuando se introduce un palillo dentro del opérculo este arrastra un residuo castaño en forma de hebra viscosa, que se estira hasta 4 cm.</p>
